JEWELLERY CARE
With care and attention, your Golden Horn handmade jewellery can last a lifetime. In our conscious care guide, you'll discover expert tips on how to clean sterling silver pieces, maintain the brilliance of your gold-plated jewellery, and keep your gemstones looking as radiant as the day you got them.
Handmade Jewellery Care
Handmade jewellery made from sterling silver and mixed metals is an affordable luxury that you can enjoy wearing every day. But it requires regular cleaning and care to keep it looking its best. Everyday pollutants, wear and tear, and body lotions can tarnish silver, gold-plated, and gemstone jewellery and make it lose its shine.
With a little extra attention and our top storage tips, your chains, bracelets, and earrings will continue to sparkle season after season.
Our Golden Rules:
- Always store handmade jewellery in the original box, a soft pouch, or wrapped individually in non-abrasive fabric.
- Remove sterling silver and gold-plated jewellery before exercising, showering and swimming
- Allow body lotions and fragrances to dry on the skin before wearing your Golden Horn jewellery.
- Get dressed before putting on your jewellery to avoid snagging or catching any gemstones.
- Remove your jewellery before you go to bed.
- Clean your handmade jewellery regularly.
Sterling Silver Jewellery Care
Sterling silver is hardwearing and eternally beautiful, remaining one of the most popular precious metals used in jewellery making today. As an alloy of pure silver and other metals, usually copper, sterling silver is strong enough for everyday wear and hypoallergenic, making it ideal for sensitive skin. But it can tarnish if not cleaned and cared for properly.
Cleaning Your Sterling Silver Jewellery:
The beauty of sterling silver jewellery is that you can clean it at home without buying expensive cleaning products. We recommend:
- Cleaning silver jewellery in warm soapy water.
- Use a soft toothbrush to gently remove any dust or particles on gemstones.
- Rinse in clean water, dry thoroughly.
- Restore the natural shine with a jewellery polishing cloth. We recommend these ones from Connoisseurs.
Gold Plated Jewellery Care
Gold plated jewellery allows us to bask in the golden glow of yellow gold without splurging on the real thing. It’s an everyday luxury for people who love to sparkle and an affordable way to add the latest jewellery fashions to our must-have collections.
Our gold-plated jewellery has a sterling silver base coated with a layer of 18ct gold. It looks and feels just like the real thing, but the plating can wear off if not cared for properly, and so you need to master the Midas touch!
Cleaning Gold Plated Jewellery
When it comes to cleaning gold plated jewellery, treat it just as you would a precious family heirloom. It doesn’t like lotions, potions, and perfumes, and you should never wear gold plated jewellery in water. You can clean gold plated jewellery much in the same way as sterling silver jewellery:
- Clean with warm soapy water and a soft lint-free cloth.
- Avoid using a toothbrush, polishing cloths, antibacterial soaps, or jewellery cleaners that could scratch or wear away the layer of gold.
- Store gold plated jewellery separately from other pieces in your jewellery box. Other metals can wear away the gold and accelerate tarnishing.
- Keep each piece in its original Golden Horn packaging, or wrap it individually in a pouch or piece of cloth.
We can re-plate any of our gold plated jewellery to restore its radiant glow. Please see further details in our warranty section
Gemstone Jewellery Care
We only use genuine gemstones in Golden Horn Jewellery, which we hand-pick for their vibrant colours and brilliant shine. Each stone is unique, just like you, and they have different physical properties. All gemstones are susceptible to dulling and scratching when exposed to air pollutants and everyday elements. Gemstone do not like light and heat, and like all handmade jewellery, they are sensitive to lotions and potions, so clean them regularly and store them with care to showcase their true beauty.
Cleaning Gemstone Jewellery
Regularly cleaning your precious gemstone jewellery is the best way to ensure it continues to glow with its original vibrance and removes any unwanted energies that may have attached to it. To do this, we recommend:
- Cleaning gemstone jewellery in warm soapy water.
- Use a soft toothbrush, and a lint-free cloth.
- Please avoid harsh chemical cleaners and detergents as they may cause lasting damage.
- Soak gemstone necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings in the soapy solution for a minute or two before using the toothbrush to gently clean around the settings.
- Rinse, dry, and polish lightly to restore shine.
We cannot stress how important it is to store gemstone jewellery in its original box or individual pouches. Throwing it into your jewellery box with other pieces will inevitably lead to dulling and scratches.
